Early Life and Acting Beginnings

There is very limited information regarding Jermaine’s life prior to his rise to fame as an actor. Not a lot of details have been shared about his family, except that his mother was the reason that he started an acting career. There is also no information regarding his upbringing and education.

At the age of 14, his mother brought him to a casting call audition by Warner Bros. in New York. This led to him being cast in the film entitled “Lean on Me”, on which he worked opposite Morgan Freeman. He played the role of a misguided drug-abused high school student named Thomas Sams; the film is loosely based on the story of Principal Joe Louis Clark whose school was at risk of being taken over by the government due to low scores in the New Jersey Minimum Basic Skills Test. Two years later, he had another acting project entitled “Juice” on which he worked with Tupac Shakur and Khalil Kain.

The crime film follows the story of four black youths growing-up in Harlem, and was the acting debut of Shakur.

Rise to Prominence

At around the same time, Hopkins was given a four episode role in the show “The Royal Family”. The sitcom which ran on ABC was produced by Eddie Murphy, and starred Redd Foxx alongside Della Reese. After a year, he then starred in the HBO television movie entitled “Strapped” which is known for being the directing debut of Forest Whitaker. The movie featured rappers such as Busta Rhymes, Yo-Yo, and Kool Moe Dee.

Following this work, he had a string of guest roles. He made appearances in “Murder One”, “The Parent ‘Hood”, and “Moesha”. In 1996, he starred in the film “Phat Beach” alongside Coolio and Brian Hooks, an independent film which proved a success. During the same year, he worked on the film “Bullet” which featured Mickey Rourke, Tupac Shakur and Adrien Brodey, and was shot in New York City with most scenes filmed in Brooklyn. The following year, he appeared in the television movie entitled “Riot” which starred Luke Perry, and follows the Los Angeles riots of 1992 which occurred after the beating of Rodney King, and the acquittal of the four police officers responsible.

Latter Career and Drug Problems

Jermaine’s next project would be the film “Def Jam’s How to Be a Player”, which starred Bill Bellamy and Natalie Desselle. Afterwards, he had a recurring role in the television show “The Wayans Bros.”, playing the character Dupree for a total of 10 episodes in the sitcom which ran from 1995 to 1999, starring real life brothers Shawn and Marlon Wayans. One of his last mainstream projects was a support role in an episode of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”.

Over the next few years, his projects would become sporadic and were mostly independent films. His last project was entitled “Zoo”, released in 2012. At around the same time, it was revealed that he had been arrested for attempting to purchase 200 grams of marijuana from an undercover cop. He was set to face years in prison, but the final sentence led to 30 days in jail and three years of probation. He did not learn from his previous mistake, however, as his addiction to drugs led to another arrest in 2017, in North Carolina, carrying over five pounds of marijuana in the trunk of his car.

He pleaded guilty to felony possession, and was given 24 months of supervised probation.
