In 1988 she relocated back to Texas, and started working for Houston’s KHOU-TV as a correspondent, then once more moved back to New Orleans, to work as a journalist/grapple for WVUE.

In 1991, she had an opportunity to host “Extreme Close-Up”, and within three years on the show, Arthel covered over 200 meetings with some of the biggest Hollywood stars, including Tom Cruise, Will Smith, and Sharon Stone. This made her the country’s first prominent black female stimulation columnist.

In 1994, when Arthel was hosting the Miss USA pageant; she met Derrick Lassic, a former Dallas Cowboy and an NFL free agent. The two fell in love, and the following year, they tied the knot in New Orleans. Arthel’s uncle Aaron performed at their wedding, along with the Neville Brothers at their reception.

The couple adopted a bi-coastal lifestyle, with Lassic living in North Carolina and Arthel in Los Angeles.

However, things didn’t work out, and their marriage failed to stand the test of time. After being married for only three years, the couple divorced in 1998.

In 1999 while Arthel was backstage at a New Orleans concert, and met Taku Hirano, who is a drummer from Japan. An interest was sparked between them, and after two years of a long-distance relationship, Hirano asked for Arthel’s hand in marriage from her parents. They obliged!

Arthel told Essence that ‘the initial hope of any black family is that their child will marry someone black. However, their hope is that their child will end up with someone who loves and takes care of her’.

Hirano proposed to her on a gondola while they were on vacation to Venice in Italy. They had a beach wedding in Hawaii in 2001 and went on their honeymoon in Japan. While there, Arthel met Hirano’s family. The two are yet to welcome a child into this world – Arthel doesn’t have any children from her previous marriage either.
