Who is Wentworth Miller?
Born on 2 June 1972, in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, under the air sign of Gemini, Wentworth Earl Miller III is an American actor and screenwriter. He is best known for portraying Michael Scofield, the mischievous protagonist in the hit TV crime drama “Prison Break”. After the conclusion of the series, he debuted as a screenwriter with “Stoker”, a 2013 thriller. Fans also know him as Captain Cold in “The Flash” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”, both shows centered around heroes from the DC Comics universe. From 2007, he consistently denied rumors around his homosexuality, before eventually coming out in 2013. In addition to his acting prowess, Miller is an activist for mental health awareness and LGBTQ rights.
Early Life and Education: From Britain to Brooklyn
Wentworth was born into an American family in Oxfordshire. His mother, Roxann Miller, is a special education teacher, while his father, Wentworth E. Miller II, is a lawyer, teacher and former district attorney. At the time of his son’s birth, having graduated from Yale University he was attending the University of Oxford under a Rhodes Scholarship, which is the first international scholarship program ever established. Even though Wentworth’s parents intended to reside in Britain permanently for work-related purposes, the family moved to Park Slope, an upscale neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. He has two younger sisters, Leigh and Gillian. Leigh ended up following her father’s footsteps, and enrolled at an unspecified college in Virginia to study law. Gillian obtained a PhD from an unspecified institution in the state of Massachusetts.
Wentworth first attended Quaker Valley High School, but moved to Sewickley Heights in 1990 with his father, where he matriculated from an unspecified high school in 1991. Later, he graduated from Princeton University, majoring in English Literature. While attending Princeton, he was a member of an a cappella group and several clubs dabbling in various activities.
What is Wentworth’s Ethnicity?
Unbeknownst to most, Wentworth’s father is of African-American and Jamaican descent. He also has German and English ancestry. His mother, on the other hand, has French, Swedish, Syrian, Lebanese, Rusyn (apparently Ukrainian), Dutch and Austrian roots. Miller’s paternal grandfather was a first-generation American, a child of Jamaican immigrants who arrived in Brooklyn at the beginning of the 20th century. Several of Wentworth’s ancestors come from Curaçao, Poland and Spain.
Career Beginnings: Moving to Los Angeles, Struggles and Finally – Buffy
In 1995, Wentworth realized that there weren’t that many acting opportunities on the East Coast, so to have a better chance of pursuing his dreams of becoming an actor, he moved to Los Angeles. Unlike most famous actors, he only realized that the profession was right for him when he was a freshman in college. ‘When I got to college, acting suddenly seemed like a very risky proposition and all my friends were going to law school or med school or Wall Street.’, recalled Miller. His background in English literature prepared him for what was about to come.
After persevering through numerous setbacks, problems and roadblocks, he finally landed a role, when in 1998 he was cast as Gage Petronzi, a student who turns into a sea monster, in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. His next role was in “Popular” as Adam Rothschild-Ryan, and immediately afterwards he made appearances in “Time of Your Life”, “ER” and two highly rated short movies. However, Wentworth’s first starring role was in “Dinotopia”, a fantasy mini-series about two brothers who end up on an island filled with dinosaurs after their plane crashes. This was his big breakthrough, as Miller then started getting lucrative offers for various shows.
Establishing Himself: The Human Stain, Underworld, Ghost Whisperer and More
We then saw Miller in “The Human Stain”, a hit thriller from 2003 featuring Nicole Kidman and Anthony Hopkins – the experience of acting alongside one of the industry’s legends in Hopkins showed him what he had to do to achieve greatness. Just months after, he assumed the role of Dr. Adam in “Underworld”, followed by appearances in music videos for “We Belong Together” and “It’s Like That”, both by Mariah Carey, which turned him into somewhat of a celebrity, as he gained many female fans. Miller followed this up with appearances in “Ghost Whisperer” and “Stealth”, but his biggest achievement was right around the corner.
His Greatest Accomplishment: Prison Break
In 2005, Wentworth was approached by Fox with an offer to play a hardened criminal in their new show “Prison Break”. Initially hesitant to accept the offer for such an ambitious project, this ended up being the crown jewel of his career, as he appeared in every episode. In 2006, this young star was even nominated for a Golden Globe Award. He originally assumed the role from 2005 to 2009 and became a superstar. Fans of the show were ecstatic when Fox announced that the show would return in for a fifth season in 2016. One year later, Miller’s co-star, Dominic Purcell, announced via social media that a sixth season was in early development. Since then, we haven’t heard anything about a possible date or any other details. The only insight is from Wentworth’s Instagram.
Life After (and During) Prison Break
While “Prison Break” became one of the most watched shows in the entire US, Miller also had other projects. His most notable roles during this time were in “House”, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Young Justice”. Fans of “Resident Evil”, Sony’s iconic horror franchise has taken a liking to him after he took on the role of Chris Redfield in “Resident Evil: Afterlife”. In recent years, Wentworth succeeded in remaining relevant, as he was cast as Captain Cold, one of DC’s most famous villains in both “The Flash” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”. His character was recurring, and we could see the same sinister charm he became known for in “Prison Break”.
Personal Life: Is Wentworth Miller Really Gay? Does He Have a Boyfriend?
Rumors about his homosexuality first surfaced in 2007, which he immediately shot down during an interview in InStyle magazine. ‘I’m not gay, but that rumor can’t be killed. I’d like to have a girlfriend and a family. But I haven’t met the right one yet. Until then I’m focusing on my job.’, he stated. However, in 2013 he shocked the world. Apparently, he was invited to appear at the Saint Petersburg International Film Festival (SPIFF) in Russia. Shortly before he received his invitation, Russian authorities enacted a controversial law that legally prohibits ‘any propaganda of nontraditional (non-heterosexual) sexual relations’.Miller used this a chance to stand up for the rights of the LGBTQ people in this country. His statement read, in part ‘…I would love to come. However, as a gay man, I must decline.
https://twitter.com/Went_miller72/status/129701258738143232
I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government.’ Since then, there have been rumors connecting him to Luke Macfarlane and many other famous men. He’s been pictured with several potential partners since his coming out, but has always refused to comment on his relationship status. According to several reports from early 2019, he is currently single.
Mental Health Struggles
In 2013, at the Human Rights Campaign Dinner in Seattle, Washington, Miller openly admitted that he attempted to take his own life several times as a teenager. He said that the reason for this was the confusion he felt due to his sexuality. ‘When someone asked me if that was a cry for help, I said no, because I told no one. You only cry for help if you believe there’s help to cry for.’, he said during a touching speech. Additionally, he credited the ManKind Project and Active Minds as organizations that helped him regain confidence in himself, and finally summon the courage to come out in public. In 2016, he responded to a meme of one his photos in 2010, when he gained a lot of weight, with another confession. During that time, he also had suicidal tendencies, and tried to find comfort in food. In the same Facebook post, Wentworth also admitted that he’d suffered from depression ever since he was a child, describing the condition as ‘a battle that’s cost [him] time, opportunities, relationships, and a thousand sleepless nights.’
Body Measurements: How Tall is Wentworth Miller?
Wentworth Miller is 6ft 1in (185cm) tall, weighs around 170lbs (77kgs) and has a slim figure, as evident by his many topless scenes in “Prison Break”. His hair is black with grayish strands here and there, while his eyes are light blue.
Net Worth: How Rich is Wentworth Miller?
Have you ever wondered how affluent Wentworth Miller really is? According to several reputable sources, he has a net worth of approximately $5 million, as of August 2019, accumulated by appearing in several highly popular shows over the course of his career, with the most significant being “Prison Break”. Given the fact that he’s still as active as ever, there is a real chance that we might see his net worth rise in the near future.

1 | I’m hoping that what I am or what I’m not ethnically doesn’t limit me in anyone else’s eyes. I guarantee you it doesn’t in mine. |
2 | Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) was a terrific show and Sarah Michelle Gellar was terrific in it. It’s really difficult straddling that line between drama and comedy, action and romance, sci-fi and reality and Sarah did it beautifully — on who he feels are underrated actors. |
3 | I don’t get a chance to watch much. On DVD Oz (1997), Reno 911! (2003) and Family Guy (1999) are definitely in the top 10. I did manage to squeeze in an entire The Surreal Life (2003) marathon on VH-1 one weekend. I just couldn’t turn it off. I felt dirty, but in a good way — on what are his favorite TV shows. |
4 | I have a little fantasy where in the last episode of the season, we slip into the prison’s sewer system, up through the grate, and pop out a hatch – and we’re face to face with Matthew Fox and spend season 2 on a tropical beach – jokingly linking his show, Prison Break (2005) to Lost (2004). |
5 | When asked what character from literature he would like to play: “Well, if we can expand the definition of literature to include comic books, I’d definitely love a crack at “General Zod” from “Superman”. So I’m hoping that Bryan Singer makes a sequel to the “Superman” that’s coming out and casts me” (TV Guide, April 10-16,2006). |
6 | “I made a decision not to work out because I’m lazy and also, the character is not a superhero. I didn’t want him to be a buff guy with Jackie Chan moves because the point is he’s smarter than your average Joe”
|
7 | “I’m kind of a dork. I don’t have much game. I’m not particularly comfortable in bars or clubs. I much prefer being home playing Scrabble, having dinner with a couple friends, going to see a movie, or losing a whole weekend to Season 14 of Law & Order (1990) or The Simpsons (1989). |
8 | My father is black and my mother is white. Therefore, I could answer to either, which kind of makes me a racial Lone Ranger, caught between two communities. |
9 | “My experience is that I find myself having to constantly define myself to others, day-in, day-out. The quote that’s helped me the most through that is from Toni Morrison’s “Beloved” where she says, “Definitions belong to the definers, not the defined” – so I find myself defining myself for other people lest I be defined by others and stuck into some box where I don’t particularly belong”. |
10 | The show is completely preposterous. But that aside, it’s a great ride. |
11 | You might look at my CV and see I’ve had 12 jobs, but I’ve been to over 450 auditions so I’ve heard ‘no’ a lot more than I’ve heard ‘yes’. So if I go in looking only to meet my own standards, then that will make taking that rejection a little bit easier. And when I do get that job it will seem like icing on the cake. |
12 | When I got to college, acting suddenly seemed like a very risky proposition and all my friends were going to law school or med school or Wall Street. |

His letter read, in part, “…it would make me happy to say yes. However, as a gay man, I must decline.
