Childhood and education
Michael was raised in Evansville alongside her older sister. Her mother is black, and works for the Bristol Myers pharmaceutical company, while her father is white and works as a furniture rental businessman. Michael was named after Michael Ann, who is her mother’s closest friend, and she is one of very few female celebrities with this name.
Michael grew up wanting to become an actress, as she was excited about watching all the movies and series which were being shown on TV. She was very friendly during her high school years, and had a couple of close friends with whom she went to parties and did all the usual teenage things, while she was also very sporting as she was part of the basketball team. Michael finished Howard Roosa Elementary School, then matriculated from Benjamin Boose High School, and subsequently focused on her acting career, rather than enrolling at college.

Career of an actress
Michael’s career was launched soon after she matriculated, as she appeared in several music videos by Freddie Jackson and Eric Gable, while also occasionally winning some small roles in movies and TV series.
She rose to prominence after she turned against the popular actor Eddie Murphy, and sweat him for $75 million after she was allegedly fired from the “Harlem Nights” movie because she didn’t want to go out with him. Murphy addressed the matter (as he had to because she was suing him) and explained that he did not want to work with her because she wasn’t right for the role, and stated that he did not touch her, as Michael claimed in her lawsuit. Murphy also brought up the fact that if he was really planning on sleeping with her, he would have done it before giving her the role. The lawsuit was settled out of court – the details haven’t been shared with the public.
Michael became popular thanks to her role in the “New Jack City” movie shot in 1991. The movie was a major hit, and although it made Michael popular, it took her six years to land her next role, in “The 6th Man” comedy movie. In 1992, she appeared in the “Dangerous Curves” CBS crime drama series, and was part of it for two seasons. She won her first lead role in 1993 in the “Trade Winds” miniseries, and then began appearing in the “New York Undercover” Fox drama series.
In 1998, she won a role in “Homicide: Life on the Street”, which got her several award nominations, however, she didn’t manage to win any. She went on to have her longest role in the “ER” medical drama from 1999 to 2002, for which she was again nominated for awards, without success.

She starred alongside Will Smith in the “Ali” biographical movie shot in 2001, and then went on to appear in the “Dark Blue” and “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” movies shot in 2002 and 2003. In 2004, she appeared in “Kevin Hill” film, and in 2007 in a single episode of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”, and two episodes of “House”.
In 2011, Michael became part of the cast of the “Gossip Girl” CW teenage drama, she then appeared in single episodes of “The Following”, “Blue Bloods”, and “MacGyver” TV series in 2016, and is now acting in the “Dynasty” TV series as Dominique Deveraux.
Michael is also a fashion designer, and is juggling between this and her job of an actress.

Michael is very secretive when it comes to her love life, as she hasn’t shared much regarding her present and past boyfriends with the public, however, being a popular actress means one cannot completely avoid media curiosity.
