He became interested in journalism while attending a local high school, and was supported and encouraged by his parents to pursue a college degree. Jonathan was amongst the top of his class, but was interested in numerous other activities during those four years, including practicing creative writing and appearing in school plays.

He matriculated in 1985, and then enrolled at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1989.

Career as a journalist

Jonathan completed his internship while still attending Carleton, but hasn’t revealed where, then upon graduation began working as a researcher on NBC’s “The Today Show”.

He spent close to four years at NBC, then was in 1993 hired to work on the editorial board of the newspaper “New York Daily News”, a job which he held for the following seven years; Jonathan was the youngest person sitting on that board.

He was invited to join the pay TV network Bloomberg News in 2000, and thus quit his job at “New York Daily News”; when the American businessman and politician Michael Rubens Bloomberg ran for New York City mayor in 2001, Jonathan co-wrote his speeches, and served as his advisor.

He became a writer for the newspaper “The Washington Post” in 2007, and has been holding the job to this day; Jonathan also contributes commentary to various MSNBC shows, and is the host of the podcast “Cape Up”, in which he discusses race, gender and religion in politics.

Further, “The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart” premiered on MSNBC on 13 December 2020.

In January 2021, he began hosting the political commentary segment on the evening TV show “PBS NewsHour”, having replaced Mark Shields, and since 30 March 2022, Jonathan has been working as an associate editor of “The Washington Post”.

In 1999, when the staff of “New York Daily News” won a Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing for their story about the mismanagement of Apollo Theatre in Harlem, Jonathan was a key contributor to writing that story.

He was a 2011 Esteem Honoree, an accolade given to people who have shown support to LGBT and African-American communities.

Jonathan has also shown that he likes to spend his spare time at natural locations, rather than in overcrowded cities.

Jonathan has a Facebook page which he seems to be using only to keep in touch with his closest friends and family members.

He doesn’t have his own TikTok account, but many videos featuring him have been uploaded onto MSNBC’s account.

Love life and husband Nick Schmit

Jonathan’s more or less open when it comes to sharing the details of his love life with his fans, and it’s widely known that he’s gay.

He began dating Nick Schmit back in 2011, after the two had met while working; Nick is probably known best for having worked at the State Department as the assistant chief of protocol. The two men became engaged in May 2016, and exchanged vows in a private ceremony on 7 January 2017, officiated by the American lawyer Eric Holder.

It’s believed by some of Jonathan’s fans that he and Nick are planning to adopt a child, but that they are waiting because they still want to work on their careers; others claim that they are perhaps a bit too old to become parents, and aren’t planning to adopt. Jonathan and Nick haven’t commented on these rumors.
