Dan + Shay
Smyers met Shay Mooney in Nashville, Tennessee in 2012 and the two started writing songs together the day after they met. His music partner had been actively pursuing a music career since leaving college and was a solo artist for T-Pain’s Nappy Boy Entertainment. He was also a member of groups called Transition and Bonaventure, before they decided on forming Dan + Shay. The first song they wrote together was considered by Rascal Flatts, and after two months they had multiple publishing offers, before deciding to sign with Warner/Chappell. In 2013, they released their debut single entitled “19 You + Me” which received positive reviews.
This would lead to their debut album entitled “Where It All Began” which was released the following year, and was produced with Scott Hendricks. Their second single “Show You Off” was released shortly afterwards, and they then performed on “The Ellen Show”. During the same year, they made their debut at the Grand Ole Opry, and received a nomination at the 2014 Academy of Country Music Awards for Vocal Duo of the Year. In 2015, they achieved their first number one Country Airplay song with their third single – “Nothin’ Like You”. They then toured as the opening act for Hunter Hayes on his We’re Not Invisible Tour.
Continued Touring and Recent Releases
The duo also worked with Blake Shelton in his Ten Times Crazier Tour, before headlining their own 10-date tour called Where It All Began Tour. Afterwards, they collaborated with Hunter Hayes once more in a tour called Tattoo (Your Name) Tour. They then announced a tour called Just the Right Kind of Crazy for which they travelled through the Midwest and eastern US. Following the tour, they released the single “From the Ground Up”, which is intended to be the first single of their sophomore album.

In 2016 they released their second single – “How Not To” – which reached the top of the Country Airplay charts once more. The following year they released “Road Trippin”, the third single of the album. After the release of their album, they then took a year to write new songs, and then released “Tequila” which would be a part of their self-titled third studio album. The single became their highest charting song in the US Billboard Hot 100, reaching the top 40. They also collaborated with Kelly Clarkson for the single “Keeping Score”, and released “Dan + Shay (The Vocals).” He stated in an interview that some of his influences include Goo Goo Dolls and the Foo Fighters. He also enjoys the music of Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, and Rascal Flatts.
Personal Life and Social Media
For his personal life, it is known that Smyers married Abby Law in 2017, after being in a relationship for many years, and engaged for a year – he proposed while they were on a vacation in Hawaii. She has appeared as a cameo in the Dan + Shay’s video for the single “Speechless”. The couple own four rescue dogs. The two met in an animal rescue center and have a shared passion towards rescue animals.
