The personal life of the family
In 1978, Alberto’s parents fled to Spain with Alberto when he was only a month old, to escape Argentina’s military dictatorship. The small family of three lived in Spain for four years, then returned to Argentina in 1982.
Career
Alberto returned to Spain to join the Théâtre Séminaire Jolie Libois. A Spanish artistic agency, Kuranda, organized a contest to discover new talents, and albert earned a spot on the Caras Nuevas list.
Alberto started out in theater before moving on to screen roles.
He played a role in the play “Las brujas de Salem” (The Crucible), directed by Ricardo Ceballos.
Alberto’s screen debut dates back to 2008 with the television series “Plan America”. In 2009 he appeared in the Spanish film ‘Cell 211’, playing a prison guard whose identity is mistaken for an inmate during the prison takeover. Alberto’s impressive performance won him a Spanish SAG Award for Best Actor and a Goya Award (Spanish Academy Award). “Cell 211” was named the most successful film of 2009.
Building on the success of “Cell 211”, Alberto was cast in the lead role in the Spanish and Brazilian film “Lope” in 2010, playing Lope de Vega, who was a Spanish playwright and poet in the late 16th and early 17th century. In 2011, Alberto co-starred alongside Daniel Bruhl in the science fiction film “Eva”, directed by Kike Maillo.
In 2012, he starred in the thriller film “Invader”, playing the role of a Spanish military doctor trying to help bring peace to Iraq.
“Invader” director Daniel Calparsoro was so impressed with Alberto’s acting that he offered him a role in his next film, “Combustion,” and that same year he co-starred with Ricardo Darin in the thriller “Tesis Sobre Un Homicidio”, directed by Hernán A. Godfrid.
In 2013, in “Mindscape”, a sci-fi thriller directed by Jorge Dorado, Alberto played his first role in English. From August 28, 2015, Alberto starred in the American-Colombian Netflix series, “Narcos”, which follows the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar (played by Wagner Moura), the infamous drug lord Colombian. Alberto played Pablo’s rival, Hélmer “Pacho” Herrera, who is also a drug lord and leader of the Cali Cartel. Alberto’s performance made him a household name and earned him most of his fame.
In 2016, Alberto played scientist Javier Delgado in the second season of ‘Mars’ – Javier was part of the first mission to visit Mars, followed by starring in the Antena 3 miniseries, ‘Apaches’, which was based on the best-selling novel by Miguel Sáez Carral.
In 2018, Alberto reprized his role as Pacho Herrera, one of Cali’s four bosses from 1983, in the “Narcos” spin-off, “Narcos: Mexico”, which focuses on illegal drug trafficking.
Private life
Alberto’s character in “Narcos” is gay. After a seductive and passionate scene with the character of Alberto and his male love interest in the third season premiere episode, some people have come to believe that Alberto is a closeted gay man. Despite Alberto’s convincing performance, he has never been romantically involved with another man, suggesting that he is heterosexual.
However, he was romantically involved with one woman – Spanish makeup artist Clara Méndez-Leite is believed to be Alberto’s girlfriend. The two met in 2012 on the set of “The Invader,” for which Clara was a makeup artist for the cast. They also worked in the television series “Apaches”. Starting in 2012, rumors of Alberto and Clara being an object spread like wildfire. On December 20, 2016, Alberto posted a photo with Clara and captioned it “Amor”, which means “love”, which could be confirmation of their relationship.
Alberto and Clara opened an acting school, which is an acting academy, and announced the opening on Alberto’s Instagram on May 20, 2017. He posted a photo of Clara and provided a clear description of the company in the caption of the post. On September 11, 2017, Alberto posted a photo of him and Clara lounging on the lawn, soaking up the sun, and reading a book. On June 2, 2018, Clara posted a photo of her and Alberto at a charity dinner.
