François Verove’s suicide note
Verove admitted he was “The Hailed” or “The Pockmarked Man” as police approached him for crimes including the rape and murder of an 11-year-old child in 1986, reported the French newspaper Le Parisien.
Verove committed suicide in the town of Grau-du-Roi on Wednesday with a lethal dose of the drug after dodging a DNA test that could have linked him to long unsolved crimes, Le Parisien said.
The suspected killer, who is believed to have been married with two children, said in his memo that he was “not doing well” during his madness, which ended in the 1990s, but said he had found itself, the BBC reported.
“The pockmarked man” is believed to be at the origin of the rape and murder in 1986 of Cécile Bloch, 11, in Fountainebleau. The report says the girl’s body was found stabbed to death in the basement of the building where her family lived.
A witness said he encountered a man in the elevator on the day of the murder who had marks on his skin, which earned him the nickname – and an artist’s sketch of the suspect hanging on the walls of the police department local for decades, the BBC has said.
The man in the elevator told the witness to have a “very, very good day,” the witness said in an interview with South West in 2015.
DNA has linked “The Pockmarked Man” to other crimes, such as a double murder in 1987, the 1994 murder of 19-year-old Karine Leroy, and six rapes with victims as young as 11, according to reports.
