He fell in love with acting while attending high school, and went on to spend several months every year in the Interlochen Arts Camp, where he worked on his acting skills. After matriculation, Barrett enrolled at the University of Michigan from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theatre. He was attracted by London’s theatre scene, and therefore spent some time there studying and perfecting his acting skills – he has also been part of several theater acting groups, and has performed in some of the most popular places in London, including but not limited to the New London Barn Playhouse.
Career of a theatre actor
Although Barrett is not much of a believer, he did not want to pass on the role of Jesus in the “Godspell” theatre play, which helped him rise to prominence – he won the role soon after he graduated from college, and because of his great acting skills was invited to appear in numerous other plays. He then went on hiatus for a short period of time, as he started working for the Theatre Works – during his short time there, and created a unique role for the “Kept” musical movie. Barrett got back to acting after that, and several new roles followed including that of Mordred in the popular “Camelot” play – his next role was in the “Cupid and Psyche” theatre play, for which he was later praised.
Barrett became popular worldwide after he began appearing in the “Avenue Q” musical comedy – as the show was basically revolving around puppets, Barrett decided to practice specially for this role, which led to him winning the main role in the show on 1 February 2005. He was part of the cast for nearly two years, but for around a year he was simultaneously playing in “Avenue Q”, and in “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” as Leaf Coneybear. After that, Barrett won roles in numerous other theatre plays, but as people today watch more TV series, Barrett is mostly popular for his role of Eric Beale in “NCIS: Los Angeles”, which he won in 2009 – he has been part of the main cast since then, and is still shooting for the show.
Other than that, Barrett has acted in “The Closer” and “Numbers” TV series, “Submissions Only” web series in 2011, “My Synthesized Life” in 2013, and in the “Will & Grace” sitcom in 2019.
Is Barrett married to Renée Felice Smith or is he gay?
Barrett was one of the most secretive people in the film industry, as he wasn’t talking about any girls he might have dated throughout the years to a point in February 2019, when he decided to come out of the closet and admit to being gay. In 2013, many people believed that Barrett was dating the popular female actress Renee Felice Smith, because both of them were acting in the “NCIS: Los Angeles” TV series, and often shared pictures of them together on their social media accounts.
Some people even took the rumors a step further, and announced that the two exchanged the wedding vows – although neither Barrett nor Renee have commented on these rumors, it is known that the two were only friends, as Renee has been dating her longtime boyfriend Christopher Gabriel for years now. Probably getting tired of hiding his sexual orientation from everyone, Barrett decided to share the fact that he was gay with his fans in February 2019 – most of the fans were not shocked as they had already suspected this, but it is a fact that Barrett lost part of his fanbase due to this confession (but he has also attracted new fans). As he hasn’t talked about currently seeing anyone, Barrett appears to be single, hasn’t married, and doesn’t have any kids.
Interests and hobbies
Barrett is currently mostly focused on his acting career, but there are several other things he enjoys doing in his spare time. Barrett exercises in the gym several times per week, but doesn’t normally do this because he enjoys it – he is used to working out for the roles he is playing, and sometimes drastically changes his appearance and loses weight for another role. He has admitted that this isn’t easy, but has also stated to be enjoying the challenge. Barrett is a big lover of animals and has a pet dog whose name is not known – he often uploads pictures of his dog onto his Instagram account.
Barrett is quite fond of travelling and has been all around Europe, while he has travelled around the UK while he was still attending college – he is hoping to one day have a tour around the entire world, and has compared this to the “Around the World in Eighty Days” movie.
Appearance and net worth
Barrett is currently 41 years old. He has short brown hair, brown eyes and wears glasses, while his height and weight are unknown. According to authoritative sources, Barrett’s current net worth has been estimated to be more than $2 million, and is still steadily rising mostly thanks to his role in the “NCIS: Los Angeles” TV series.
Barrett is quite active on several popular social media networks and seems to be enjoying the attention he is getting on the internet.
Barrett launched his Twitter account in August 2009, and has gathered more than 100,000 followers and tweeted over 4,200 times. He is a bit more popular on his Instagram account, which currently counts nearly 140,000 people following him, while he’s uploaded more than 430 pictures onto it – Barrett is also running a Facebook page, which counts nearly 20,000 fans.
